You’ve Found Me!
Maybe you’ve read one of my books, heard me read at a conference, or had me for a creative writing class or consultation. Whatever brings you here, friend, reader, or fellow writer, be welcomed.
I hope that this site satisfies your curiosity while also bringing you some pleasant surprises.
About Me
I am a writer, journal editor, teacher, writing consultant, translator, and professor of creative writing. I am the author of four books, which include two short story collections, an ecological memoir, and a story cycle (a novel in stories). My creative writing has won honors and awards, including the prestigious John Simmons Award and the John Gardner Award for my debut collection of short stories. I am an alumnus of the Sewanee Writers’ Conference fellowship in fiction. You can read my short stories, essays, and translations online and in print in journals like Conjunctions, South85 Journal, Fiction SouthEast, Glimmer Train, Assay, PRISM, and many others. You can read my critical essays and reviews in Writing & Pedagogy, The Journal of College Composition & Communications, and Creative Writing Pedagogy. I’m also the founding editor of Wraparound South, a literary journal, and I’m a Professor at Georgia Southern University where I teach creative writing classes to undergraduate students in the department of Writing & Linguistics. I’m available for readings, speaking engagements, and individual manuscript consultations upon request.
Runaway Books
My books travel. Whether for business or vacation, for every overnight stay outside my hometown, I leave one of my darlings out with a special dedication for whoever will find it. Did you find one of my traveling babies? Send me a note and let me know where and how.
